Emsworth Scouts 1919- 2019
Hopefully you should now all be aware that this year is a very special year for us at Emsworth Scouts as we are celebrating our Centenary. Emsworth scouts was first inaugurated in November 1919 before officially being registered with the Scout Association in March 1920. Mr Ernest Way was our first Scout Master with a total of 20 scouts meeting at the local parish hall. Our membership today stands at close to 150 members, a testament to the hard work and dedication of the leaders both past and present and all volunteers! The one thing we have in common throughout our 100 years is working hard to share and develop those original values of our founder Lord Baden-Powell.
Our year of special events starts off on 5th October with an opening of our exhibition ‘100th Anniversary of Scouting in Emsworth’ which is being displayed at the Emsworth Museum. On display we will have photos past and present, some of the top awards that have been earned over the years, not only by our youth members but by our dedicated teams of leaders that we have been fortunate to have. There are deeds and plans of the our wonderful campsite in Harting that was given to the group in the sixties along with plans for our first purpose built headquarters along with the extensions that have shaped it into what we have today. You will also be able to see photos of events and camps from across the UK and for those fortunate enough to numerous expeditions to countries across the globe. The official opening is this Saturday 5th October at 10.30pm but if you can’t make it the exhibition is showing for the whole of October and opening times can be found at Emsworthmuseum.org.uk
The next event is in Emsworth right in the Heart of our Local community where we have teamed up with ‘Emsworth in Bloom’ and on the 20th October we will be taking responsibility with our younger members for a planter alongside the Emsworth Millpond. We will be planting bulbs and then during the year caring, watering and weeding to ensure we have a wonderful display of flowers for the spring and summer that we can be proud of.
For November we will be joining up with our Local Parkrun Havant and offering our support by providing the marshals and volunteers to run the event on the 16th November. Like us Parkrun is organised and run by volunteers for the benefit of the local community and we are very pleased that we can help them in this way.
Full details of these events will be sent out to you soon by your leaders so please look out for them. Hopefully you have also been invited to take part in our ‘Design a Centenary Badge Competition’. The best entry will be turned into our official Centenary Badge to be worn with pride by all our members during the coming Centenary Year.
Next year we are planning two group camps and numerous other activities and events, details of which we will be out soon.
We are very pleased that you will be part of our history as we enter into this our next hundred years of scouting in Emsworth.
